Jujutsu Kaisen has lost a multitude of characters throughout it's run. Both in the manga and the anime, some of the most well-liked characters have been killed off. Recently, manga artist and creator, Gege Akutami, revealed the reason behind this.
Recently, at a Jujutsu Kaisen exhibit, some new information came to light regarding the behind the scenes' creation of the manga. Not only was it revealed who Gege Akutami had initially chosen as a protagonist for the show, as well as other key plot points that have since been changed.
The question of character deaths also came up, and it seems that in Jujutsu Kaisen no one is safe... but there is a reason why Gege has decided to kill off fan favorites from the show and manga. Is it a good one, though?
Jujutsu Kaisen: Gege Akutami Reveals Why The Most Liked Characters Die
Warning: Spoilers For Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 are included in this article!
In Jujutsu Kaisen there are some characters that are universally loved by both manga readers and anime-only watchers. But it seems that these are the characters you have to be worried about the most. In the second season, Nanami Kento, who was a mentor to Yuji, as well as one of the most loved characters by fans, died a gruesome death.
The death shocked so many people, that people even went as far as to create a vigil in his name at a beach in Malaysia, which the government wanted to make official even. But why was he chosen as one of the many to die in the series?
Well, in a behind the scene exhibition, it was revealed that manga artist, Gege Akutami, had Nanami's departure planned for a while. Not only that, but it was also revealed why some characters, far less popular, seem to still be living. The reason is simple. According to Akutami Gege, characters who don't have the power to make readers feel strong emotions like sadness, don't need to die.
So, while you might be mourning the loss of Nanami, or the departure of Nobara, it's all because the author knows those are the characters that will incite deep emotions within the readers. Very smart... but also very morbid. So, next time you vote on a Jujutsu Kaisen popularity poll, think twice before putting your favorite down in the number one spot.
