Fans of the fantasy game Elden Ring might soon see their favorite game turned into a live-action movie, as hinted by game director Hidetaka Miyazaki in a recent interview.
It looks like our beloved Elden Ring might be heading to the big screen. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the mastermind behind the game, hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie. This is big news, especially since Miyazaki usually steers clear of sequels and prefers to keep his works, like Demon’s Souls, Sekiro, and Bloodborne, as standalone masterpieces.
Buried within the code of Elden Ring, a text string in the Divine Tower of Limgrave map suggests that a boss fight was originally planned for the tower's summit, but it was removed for launch.
Miyazaki Hints at Potential Adaptation
This exciting revelation comes just after the release of Shadow of the Erdtree. The expansion has added fresh content to the already vast world of The Lands Between, giving us more bosses to be frustrated about. Despite the new DLC, Miyazaki confirmed that this might be the end of Elden Ring’s journey for now, at least in terms of game content.
During the interview, Miyazaki revealed that while FromSoftware doesn’t have the expertise to venture into film production themselves, he’s open to the idea of someone else taking on the challenge.
I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example,
Miyazaki said. He needs a strong partner who could bring the vision of The Lands Between to the big screen. The partnership would need to be built on trust and a clear understanding of the goals for the adaptation, but Miyazaki confirmed there’s definite interest.
George R.R. Martin Gives Confusing Hint
A couple of days after Miyazaki's interview went live, George R.R. Martin, who helped craft the lore for Elden Ring, playfully posted on his blog,
"Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on Elden Ring... I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?"
Well, this is... Dubious. While highlighting, that he knows absolutely nothing about a movie, this sounds like he knows a lot. Who talked about a television series? That's the first time we hear that news! So maybe no film, but a TV Show?
If it will be an anime or a live-action adaptation seems to be unclear, but since it's Japan and live-action adaptations never seem to satisfy the fanbase, I'd prefer to see an anime adaption like the Cyberpunk Netflix adaption.
So, if there are any Souls-nerds working in arthouse movie production companies, this might just be your golden opportunity. Imagine seeing the sprawling landscapes, epic battles, and deep lore of Elden Ring brought to life in a cinema near you. It’s an exciting thought, and who knows? Maybe we’ll get to experience The Lands Between in a whole new way.
Keep your fingers crossed, and stay tuned for more updates. Until then, may your paths be graced by the light of the Erdtree.
