The 30 Best Goth Girls in Videogames

1-31

About this list:

It's important to remember that gothic culture is more about the music and personality than the clothing, and since it's hard to know what some of these girls are listening to, we took some liberties based on their appearances. But you can bet that these goth girls have The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees on their playlists!

Moreover, we also decided not to include two characters from the same game, as there are certain productions out there that really have a knack for the culture and could have filled the list on their own. | © Electronic Arts

Gabrielle

Gabrielle (Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove)

The protagonist of her own rhythm game, a rare gem from the 3DS. Gabrielle represents the more adorable side of gothic, with an aesthetic that makes us think of spooky rather than making a statement. If they ever create a more adult version of her, we can imagine some gothic hits in her next rhythm game. | © Santa Entertainment

Detective Ito

Detective Ito (Tokyo Dark)

A great representation that being gothic is not about how you dress is the protagonist of the small title Tokyo Dark. Detective Ito gives us a hint of her musical tastes with her purple hair, but she dresses in nothing more than a classic trench coat for her profession. But who's better suited than a gothic girl to explore the darkness of Tokyo's streets and solve a murder case? | © Square Enix

Ashley Warioware

Ashley (WarioWare)

We have to start with the adorable gothic girls before diving into the more mature ones, and a design that I’ve always found simple yet straight to the point is the little witch Ashley from WarioWare. No, she’s not gothic just because she’s a witch, but just look at her! Her skull details and red eyes tell us everything we need to know. | © Nintendo

Charlie mortician tale

Charlie (A Mortician’s Tale)

What profession do you imagine a woman from this culture would have? A mortician, of course! That’s why we didn’t hesitate to include Charlie from A Mortician’s Tale. And, of course, there's her whole vibe with her hair, tattoos, and purple color palette. She’s definitely representing the goths! | © Laundry Bear Games

Bea Santello

Bea Santello (Night In The Woods)

The best gothic crocodile you'll ever meet... and maybe the only one. Bea Santello won us over with her lack of flashy humor, always ready to make sarcastic remarks to anyone who tries to be too cheerful around her. But her past is tragic, justifying her decision to dress in black with her classic Ankh on her shirt. | © Infinite Fall

Amanda Evert

Amanda Evert (Tomb Raider)

Lara Croft's colleague and rival, Amanda Evert, is an anthropologist who studies the mystical side of artifacts for darker purposes than our beloved protagonist. Speaking of dark purposes, Amanda represents the "sexy" side of goths, leaving little to the imagination and sometimes having more tattoos than clothing covering her skin. | © Eidos Interactive

Jen primal

Jen (Primal)

You might not know this little gem, but Primal is a true cult game from the 2000s, from the PS2 era. Its protagonist, Jen, is none other than half-demon, which might explain her mix of red outfits, tattoos on her back, pale skin, and dark eyes and hair. Definitely an integral part of the list. | © Sony

Ephemera

Ephemera (Bloodrayne)

To be completely honest, we could have included any character from the Bloodrayne games, as the entire aesthetic of the game follows the same vibe. But Rayne's older sister, Ephemera, represents the ultimate dark mistress, from her leather (somewhat bondage) outfits to the perpetual darkness on her face. Terrifying! | © Terminal Reality

Marie Skullgirls

Marie (Skullgirls)

The antagonist of the game Skullgirls, and the one who most deserves the game's namesake title. Marie not only has the looks with her pale complexion, red eyes, and ghostly hair, but her moves are also based on manipulating bones and skeletons to attack her enemies. Marie is our adorable (and really difficult) final boss, a maid who comes straight from the beyond. | © Hidden Variable Studios

Isabella von Carstein

Isabella von Carstein (Total War: WARHAMMER)

I was tempted to add Morathi, the Hag Queen of the Dark Elves, since I think she better represents the culture, but let's be honest: what goth girl wouldn't want to be a vampire aristocrat, with hordes of undead ready to protect your dark castle? That's why I think the iconic Isabella von Carstein feels as natural on this list as the cup of blood in her hand. | © CREATIVE ASSEMBLY

Jeanette Voerman

Jeanette Voerman (Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines)

Another game with dozens of characters that could easily be included on this list, but none are as iconic as the wild and crazy Jeanette Voerman. So much so that she is on the cover of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (and I'm sure it's not just because of her somewhat... eye-catching attire). And if you're wondering why we didn't include the other Voerman sister, well... you have to play the game. | © Troika Games

Abigail

Abigail (Stardew Valley)

Let's be honest: Out of all the girls you could have romanced in Stardew Valley, you chose Abigail. In fact, if this list were a ranking of potential romances in the game, our adventurous and sensitive girl would be in first place. That scene where she plays the flute always gets me choked up with emotion. | © ConcernedApe

Serana

Serena (Skyrim: Dawnguard)

Bethesda, why did you create one of the best companions in video game history and decide to put her in a DLC? Despite that, everyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Serena quickly falls in love with her, making our dear vampire replace Lydia in the blink of an eye. Sorry, Lydia! | © Bethesda

Celeste

Celeste (Danganronpa)

No, Celeste is not the ultimate maid... that would be Kirumi Tojo from Danganronpa 3 (this series is a bit weird). However, what she is, is the ultimate gambler, looking to make enough money to live in a gothic castle surrounded by servants who obey her every whim. Celeste knows how to maintain her poker face until the end, though seeing her angry is certainly terrifying. | © Spike

Margaret Moonlight

Margaret Moonlight (No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle)

Why are there so many gothic girls dressed as maids in video games? Anyway, Margaret Moonlight is one of the iconic bosses in No More Heroes, and not only do her clothes and makeup represent her darker side, but even her scythe, known as Le Croissant du Ange (and we all know how French and gothic goes hand in hand). It's no wonder they call her the Goddess of Death. | © Grasshopper Manufacture

Eliza Tekken 7

Eliza (Tekken 7)

With both gothic and some other outfits, Eliza from the Tekken series is our darkest fighter. I promise I didn't add her just because she's a 1000-year-old and 4-month-old vampire, but the visual style of our beloved narcoleptic fighter definitely makes us think of the same urban tribe. | © Bandai Namco

Amy

Amy (Soul Calibur)

Who was I going to add from the Soul Calibur series? Ivy, with her "special" outfits and purple color palette? Tira, with her dark and depressing look and crazy attitude? Many contenders, but none can match Amy. It's not just her gothic outfit, but starting from the fourth game, her adoptive father Raphael fully embraced the style, so it's natural that his daughter would follow in his footsteps. | © Bandai Namco

Tae Takemi

Tae Takemi (Persona 5)

The sexiest and most inappropriate doctor in video games has a place on our list (isn't it a bit weird that she wants to date high school boys?). Although we only see her in her professional attire, her pencil skirt and discreet choker give us all the corp goth vibes in the world of medicine. | © Atlus

Marnie

Marnie (Pokemon Sword and Shield)

Although there are some trainers in the Pokémon series who might represent this vibe more, including some Pokémon like Gothita (come on, it's in the name), none have reached the popularity of Marnie. With one of the most chaotic hairstyles I've ever seen in my life, she shows us that it's more about attitude than clothing, and she definitely pulls it off. | © Nintendo

Lulu

Lulu (Final Fantasy X)

I think we've all suspected that hidden under Lulu's fur coats lies a being darker than it appears at first glance. It's subtle, but you can see it in her hairstyle and her always bluish lips. Additionally, only someone with such a severe personality could be a master of black magic, not to mention that her story is one of broken hearts. It all makes sense now, doesn't it? | © Square Enix

Morrigan dragonage

Morrigan (Dragon Age)

Okay, I'll say it again just in case: Just because she's a witch doesn't mean she has to be gothic, but it's a reality that it's a trope for the two to go hand in hand in fantasy games. But Morrigan, constantly being hunted by inquisitors, really has an "anti-system" vibe that goes hand in hand with her short hair and dark makeup. | © EA

Yennefer

Yennefer of Vengerberg (The Witcher)

And since we're talking about fantasy characters, Yennefer of Vengerberg didn't have to go so hard on the subculture. Come on, it's impossible to imagine her with a color palette other than black, whether it's her outfit of eternal boots and choker, or her long black hair. | © CD Projekt

The Doll

The Doll (Bloodborne)

Another entry that goes hand in hand with the goth aesthetic, and fits perfectly on this list, is The Doll from Bloodborne. After all, the game is inspired by Victorian London horror. And in a world full of cosmic horrors, it's good to have a figure like The Doll to give us the respite we need. | © FromSoftware

Sable Ward

Sable Ward (Dead By Daylight)

One of the most recent survivors in Dead By Daylight represents a classic trope of the main character in 80s slasher movies, and it's none other than Sable Ward. Of course, her abilities are tied to darkness, and the killer that came with this DLC is as terrifying as she is... | © Behaviour Interactive

Nyx

Nyx (Hades)

Move aside, Megaera. The true mistress of the dark is none other than Nyx. The creator of the weapons you use in the game deserves a spot on the list not just for her dark appearance but because she embodies the very night itself. We could almost say she's the original goth, being darkness incarnate. | © Supergiant Games

Rogue the Bat

Rogue the Bat (Sonic the Hedgehog)

"What a price to pay!". If you get the reference, well, I apologize for bringing that infamous video back to your mind. Despite that, it's a clear sign that Rogue the Bat has transcended, moving from being a secondary character in the Sonic series to one of the most well-known characters on the internet... even if it's for the wrong reasons... | © SEGA

Morrigan

Morrigan Aensland (Darkstalkers)

And speaking of the wrong reasons... it's very possible that more people know Morrigan Aensland than the Darkstalkers series itself. And although many vampire characters could have made it to the list, none are as iconic as Morrigan. So much so, that she gradually replaced the main character, and now it's impossible to attend a video game convention without seeing a cosplay of her. | © Capcom

Bayonetta

Bayonetta

You know what I'm going to say: Witches don't equal goth. But Bayonetta is not only one of the most popular characters in the industry, being the protagonist of her own game, but her attitude gives us all the rich goth vibes, a sub-sub-subculture that is rarely represented, and even less so in a way that makes us love the character. | © SEGA

Alice Lidell

Alice Liddell (Alice: The Madness Returns)

The dark version of American McGee's Alice in Wonderland is one of the inspirations for this list. And it's not that she's goth because she's in a horror world and now has dark hair, but because the real world outside Wonderland is set in a gritty and dark London. Anyone would dive into this musical genre after experiencing the horrors that Alice went through... | © Electronic Arts

Drowned Ophelia

Drowned Ophelia (Brütal Legend)

Of course, no one on this list defines the genre better than the gothic version of Ophelia in Brütal Legend, known as Drowned Ophelia. After feeling betrayed by Eddie, she ends up drowning in the Sea of Black Tears, thus becoming the leader of the Drowning Doom. Moreover, her guitar is called Six-Stringed Sorrow, and she's a representation and reminder that being goth is about the music and not just the appearance... although she also nails it in that aspect. | © Double Fine Productions

1-31

There are certain characters in the world of video games so perfectly created that anyone can relate to them and follow them through their journey. But what about the characters for nonconformists, those who don't associate or feel identified with the rest? Although they are few, when they do appear, they tend to shine because of how cool they are... or well, stand out, rather than "shine." That's why we've decided to create a list of the 30 best goth girls in the world of video games!
