Here, we've decided to create a list of games that mess with your PC or console files, breaking the fourth wall so much that it makes us feel uncomfortable... No wonder so many of these are horror games.

The Metal Gear Solid series is known for breaking the fourth wall and requiring you to "play outside the game" to defeat some bosses. But no moment stands out as much as the fight against Psycho Mantis, who will not only check your saved games but also ask you to put the controller on the ground and actually start controlling it remotely. | © Konami
Everyone and their mother knows Undertale, and it might be the first thing that came to mind when you read this list. But if you haven't played it, I'll just say that if you start a new game from scratch, the game will remember the decisions you made in your first playthrough. Not only that, but you might have tried killing a beloved character, only to regret it and load the game before committing the dirty deed. But the game knows what you did... | © tobyfox
On the surface, Inscryption seems like a simple card game. But if you know Daniel Mullins' games, you know that he somehow alters your initial perception of whatever you’re playing. And let's just say there's a card battle at one point in the game where losing means saying goodbye to your save file forever... | © Devolver
Having Doki Doki Literature Club on this list might be a spoiler for the game, but so many streamers have played it that by now you should already know it. But in case you don't know the game's ending (and you should try it, since it is free), let's just say you'll have to navigate your PC's files. It's the only way to escape Monika. Just Monika. Just Monika. Just Monika... | © Team Salvato
Another free game? Absolutely! Outcore: Desktop Adventure is one of the best horror experiences you can get without paying a single cent, and this is due to its unconventional way of scaring you. The moment the game starts to seep out of its confines, and you find yourself playing on your desktop, you'll start to feel that at some point it will also escape the edges of your screen... | © Doctor Shinobi
OneShot is, all in all, an adorable adventure, although a very creepy one at times. But taking a page from games like NieR, you'll have to complete the game multiple times to reach the true ending. And surely you'll want to take a break and not play it all in one go. Well, when you come back, you'll discover that your character has been "dreaming" all this time. IMSCARED is a horror game that is both simple and complex. While it may seem like one of those cheap games of which there are hundreds on Steam, the brilliance of its puzzles makes you realize at once that you’re not in the hands of just any developer. And of course, to deal with some of the horrors you'll encounter in this game, you'll have to DELETE them... if you know what I mean. | © Ivan Zanotti
Lastly, we have another game for consoles, as PC players have been blessed with this list. Eternal Darkness is a horror experience based on the works of Lovecraft, and as is typical of cosmic horror, it has to scare you psychologically. But how do you convey that in a video game? Well, your character will have visions that don't interrupt the gameplay, such as seeing different parts of their body gradually explode. And if that's not enough to scare you, you might see the game decide to delete your files. Losing all your progress? Now that's scary! | © Silicon Knights
