Episode 5 of The Acolyte has proven to be one of the most unexpectedly brutal episodes in Star Wars television history. This intense episode features the big reveal of the true villain, a moment that left fans both shocked and impressed. In an interview with Inverse, showrunner Leslye Headland discussed the design and inspiration behind this deadly antagonist, revealing a surprising source: Elden Ring!

The Acolyte Episode 5 Shocks Fans With Brutal Villain Reveal Inspired By Elden Ring

Headland explained that the game's characters, particularly those encountered in cooperative play, heavily influenced the design of the villain. She noted that some of these characters are exceptionally ferocious, which adds to the menacing aura of the new Star Wars enemy.Episode 5 stands out as a major highlight of the current Star Wars series, showcasing a dramatic showdown as Maes' true master is revealed. This Sith Lord confronts and nearly annihilates a group of Jedi, including key characters like Jecki (Dafne Keen) and Yord (Charlie Barnett). Only Master Sol and Osha manage to escape the brutal onslaught.

The scene is not only shocking but also brilliantly executed, thanks in large part to the villain, who is unveiled as Maes' ally Qimir (Manny Jacinto). Qimir's swift movements and unique combat style, including using his helmet to block attacks, make him a formidable opponent. Headland mentioned that Qimir's lack of heavy armor was inspired by Elden Ring players who often enter battles wearing minimal clothing:

"So much of Qimir was understanding how to use your body and not just standing there in a suit or being encumbered by a suit. We were like, 'We have to get him in something flowy.' As soon as I said he didn’t have armor, everyone lost their mind. 'How can you not have armor?' I was like, 'Why would you wear armor if you’re not going to get hit?' It’s like the Elden Ring costume. The Elden Bling. When you summon people, you always summon the people that aren’t wearing anything, and it’s like, 'These people are f****** crazy.'"

The idea of an unarmored Sith seemed unusual to some, though characters like Darth Maul, Count Dooku, and Emperor Palpatine have traditionally worn lighter armor. In the interview, Headland confirmed that the other Jedi served as a distraction, allowing the major plot twist of Jord and Jecki's deaths to remain hidden for longer.

Reflecting on Elden Ring, Headland concluded:

"Yeah, you have to go in with that offensive attitude, especially with those bosses. You can’t be getting back and panic rolling. You have to be aggressive with them. You have to roll into things."

The acolyte continues to push the boundaries of the Star Wars universe, and Episode 5 sets a new standard for the series with its blend of unexpected brutality and innovative character design.
