Learn and Have Fun: The Best History Games

1-5

Gaming and learning history? That's possible!

Civilization VI

Civilization VI

The series of turn-based strategy games was developed by Sid Meier back in 1991, and since then, Civilization has released six main titles. The latest installment, Civilization VI, is available for PC as well as PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and as in each installment, your task is to build a civilization from a small settlement and become a world power.

Whether through war or negotiations – develop cities, explore the world and play your way through a time trip over millennia! (Image credit: Microsoft Corporation)

Red dead redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games' open-world action-adventure game already has a permanent place in video game history. That's because Red Dead Redemption 2 broke several records upon its release in 2018, including the most pre-orders and the launch weekend sales record, and is already one of the most successful games of all time.

We also want to mention that it won four Game Awards in the same year (although not Game of the Year). You can also experience history in-game because Red Dead Redemption 2 is based in the USA at the end of the 19th century. Although the locations are fictional, they are based on the real states and the game is underpinned by historical facts. (Image credit: Rockstar Games)

Age of Empires

Age of Empires

Granted, Civilization has been the forerunner – after all, AoE developer Bruce Shelley was previously co-designer on Civilization. Age of Empires is no less successful and is one of the most successful PC game series, with over 30 million copies sold. Yes, we're putting the entire series on this list, even though we know you'll say we're making it easy.

For the complete experience of history, every game belongs here – from the first part from distant 1997 to AoE II and III which deal with true historical events, all the way to the Age of Mythology spinoff that takes up Greek or Egyptian mythologies. (Image credit: Microsoft)

Call of duty 2

Call of Duty 2

If you want to know more about the Second World War and game at the same time, then Call of Duty is just the thing for you. The second part of CoD takes place in the years from 1941 to 1945 and you slip into the role of four soldiers in the fight against the German troops.

Whether as a Russian soldier in the recapture of Stalingrad or as an American in the landing of the Allies in Normandy – here you can relive the events of that time as a player. (Image credit: Activision)

Valhalla

Assassin's Creed

Yes, we're doing it again – cheating! How to pick THE ONE out of so many Assasin's Creed games? Impossible! We'll just have to name the series – and in the end, you can choose for yourself which historical event you're interested in and want to replay!

Do you want to experience the French Revolution? Play Assassin's Creed Unity! Would you prefer the American Revolution? Then better play Assassin's Creed III! Are you interested in ancient Greece? Try Assassin's Creed Odyssey! We could go on like this – the series is like a library and each game is a different chapter of history. The latest spin-off is all about Vikings, so Assassin's Creed Valhalla is also a great choice! (Image credit: Ubisoft)

Stop playing video games now and study for school instead! Most gamers have probably heard this one before. But why not both? One does not exclude the other – and this is best seen in history. Media like movies and video games can teach you valuable information that sticks and they're more exciting than the odd boring history lesson.

Many games are based on historical events and recreate them (sometimes more, sometimes less) truthfully. Of course, we don't want to say that video games can replace history lessons but sometimes it doesn't hurt to put down the history book and pick up the controller. We've got five historical games for you to kill two birds with one stone: learning and gaming!
