The LCS in America always had a Commissioner. The previous one, Jackie Felling, has resigned in April leaving the spot open for a quite a while. Now, Riot has named Mark “MarkZ” Zimmerman the new Commissioner.
LoL: What Does This Mean?
The Commissioner oversees the whole League Championship Series. It is his focus to create a holistic and outstanding experience for fans, the players and all the teams participating. Zimmerman has to report to Carlos Antunes, the Head of League of Legends Esport in Americas. Antunes creates the strategic vision and business strategy for the LEC in America. Together they are going to focus on building the vision and operation strategy for the LCS.
MarkZ brings a truly unique perspective on our league and ecosystem, as he has worn a variety of hats throughout his career. We look forward to seeing his passion and deep knowledge of the LCS shine through his new role as our Commissioner. - Antunes
MarkZ has started out as a Graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor in Game Design and Development. His Esports career began as an analyst and coach for Curse and Team Liquid in 2014. In 2016, he transitioned to being an on-air caster and analyst for the LEC.
Zimmerman said that he devoted a decade long career to the LCS, and he is honored to represent the fans, players, teams, and partners as the commissioner of the LCS.
As I step into this new role, I am commited to exploring new and innovative ways to create the best viewing experience for fans, and inspire our community so that our sport can be celebrated for generations to come. - Zimmerman
With this change, Riot has also announced that the LCS will be returning to their original weekend schedule. This begins with the Opening Week which will take place January 20 and 21 2024.
Riot has reacted to feedback with this change, as the previous schedule meant that many fans were not able to follow the league as closely. Antunes has also stated that there will be more exciting updates on the schedule and format in early January.
