It was part of the era when Disney focused more on creating strong and powerful female characters than on giving them a deep story or a real personality. The problem with Aurora is that she represents the exact opposite of modern Disney, the other side of the coin. She comes from an era when princesses were nothing more than trophies or companions for the hero or protagonist, despite being the Sleeping Beauty. And of course, this title means she spends a large part of the movie asleep. It’s no wonder more people know the name Maleficent than Aurora. | © Disney
Snow White suffers from the same problems as Aurora. Being an old movie, the representation of this princess is a bit simple, although at least she has more screen presence and is someone who seeks to earn her place among the dwarfs, not taking her life for granted like someone belonging to royalty would. But of course, when you have a character without flaws, they stop being as interesting as they could be... | © Disney
Oh, Anna. You have as many good qualities as negative ones, and the latter aren't interesting flaws or ones that really change over the course of your two movies. You went from falling in love with the main villain, a person you met a few hours ago, to falling in love with Kristoff, who is... a person you met a few hours ago. But at least Anna is a fun character who loves her sister above any suitor. | © Disney
I think part of the reason why it's easier to connect with Cinderella is because of the tragedy of her life, having lost her father and being terrorized by her stepmother and stepsisters, people who should love her. It’s great to see her come out on top, going from scrubbing floors to marrying royalty, and her capacity to forgive those who made her suffer is boundless. | © Disney
There are certain characteristics I love about Ariel, which are rarely seen in her portrayals in the movies. We always think of her as someone filled with curiosity about humans, seeking to escape her mermaid world to learn more about the surface. But there are those moments where her adventurous spirit leads her to carry quite the burden, to Eric's horror, and I have to admit, those moments make me love this character. | © Disney
The Ice Queen! Unlike her counterpart, Elsa doesn't have time to think about boys, because unlike many princesses on this list, she has a country to rule. She isn't higher on this list because, well, her character was butchered in the sequel, and now she's as interesting as a lettuce. Let's see where Frozen 3 and 4 take us and her. | © Disney
One of the more serious princesses, no matter how much they tried to make her fun, but it’s understandable. The plot of Pocahontas is tough, with her having to choose between the man she loves and her family, and we rarely see a princess have to make such a hard decision. I didn’t expect Moana to rank so high on this list, but the more I think about the simplicity of her life, which she had to abandon for a much bigger adventure to save her people, the more I feel she deserves a good spot. Additionally, she is more fun and entertaining than her counterparts, which is usually rare in a Disney movie. | © Disney
I think Rapunzel represents the separation between the old and the modern formula of how to create a Disney princess, taking the good and rejecting what doesn’t work. But if that weren't enough, her way of dealing with the world and solving her problems using her hair creates a princess that definitely stands out from the rest, no matter where you place her. You can bet that if they make a sequel to Tangled, something will happen that makes her regain her hair. | © Disney
I think Jasmine has one of the best story arcs in all of Disney. What used to be a princess ignorant of her status, who didn't even know she had to pay for an apple, becomes a woman who learns to love and care for the less fortunate, all with the help of one of them. It's a shame we can't see more of how she would have been able to affect her kingdom if she stepped into the Sultan's shoes. | © Disney
I think it would be inconsiderate to think that Tiana was a form of inclusion by Disney to have the only Black princess. Of all the princesses, none are as hardworking as Tiana. No, she doesn't seek to explore the world and see what lies beyond the horizon, like almost all the others, because she lives in the real world.
