Netflix snatched up yet another gaming IP to be turned into live action, as well as adult animation: Gears of War.
When the official announcement read that Gears of War was going to come to Netflix as live action, as well as adult animation... I was taken a little aback. Adult animation? Am I the only who thought that this means we're getting a Gears of War hentai? I'm sure Drake would approve. But... it was just a way for Netflix to make it clear the Gears of War anime will be r-rated, much like Cyberpunk Edgerunners is.
Gears of War Coming to Netflix
So we're getting a Gears of War live-action film, as well as an anime. Somehow, I'm much less worried about the anime than the live-action. Edgerunners has shown that Netflix is very capable of making a good game-to-anime adaption, but the live-action movie side of things is still a warzone.
In both cases, Netflix is working closely with the Gears of War devs, so... actually I don't if that's a good or bad thing. Game developers have often proven that they don't necessarily know how to adapt their own games. Anyway, no corporate let's an announcement go by without seasoning it with boring corporate bla-bla, and Netflix is no exception. Here's the official statement from the streaming giant:
Gears of War was released 16 years ago today and to mark the occasion, Netflix has partnered with The Coalition to adapt the Gears of War video game saga into a live action feature film, followed by an adult animated series — with the potential for more stories to follow.
