Despite getting mediocre reviews from critics and audiences alike, Sausage Party (2016) is getting a TV show. The spinoff will be called Foodtopia, and all eight episodes of the first season will be releasing on Amazon Prime later this year.
Even within the context of Seth Rogan's filmography, Sausage Party was considered too puerile for many when it released in 2016. The premise is simple enough, an anthropomorphized sausage realizes that all food is eventually eaten, so he sets about trying to escape the store before he's "killed". And, as you'd expect, it's packed from start to finish with food puns, swearing, and sexual innuendo.
But, clearly Amazon see potential in the concept, and so they've commissioned a TV show based on the film. The show, Sausage Party: Foodtopia, has an all-star cast and is set to release later this year, here is everything we know about it so far.
Sausage Party: Foodtopia Release Date
The entire first season of Sausage Party: Foodtopia will be released on July 11, 2024, on Prime Video. All eight episodes will be released at once.
A second season has not been confirmed at this point, but that's entirely to be expected. Amazon will want to see how fans react to the first season before rushing to commission a second. And this kind of project won't be cheap, given the cast.
Sausage Party: Foodtopia Plot
All we know about the plot so far comes from an Amazon press release, apparently "Frank, Brenda, Barry, and Sammy [will] try to build their own food society". Based on the trailer at least, it looks like the food will start a revolution to leave the store, then relocate to the trash outside, before realizing that due to issues such as rain living outside is unsustainable.
From there, it seems that the main characters will need to abduct or take control of a human, who will help them create a more permanent home for the food.
Sausage Party: Foodtopia Cast
And, perhaps the most exciting part of Foodtopia, the cast:
- Seth Rogen — Frank
- Kristen Wiig — Brenda
- Michael Cera — Barry
- David Krumholtz — Lavash
- Edward Norton — Sammy
- Will Forte — TBA
- Sam Richardson — TBA
- Natasha Rothwell — TBA
- Yassir Lester — TBA
"Sausage Party: Foodtopia" is executive produced by Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter, who also act as showrunners. Shaffir and Hunter co-wrote the 2016 animated film alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
Will you be tuning in? If so, you should consider getting Prime from August so you can also catch Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 when it releases (which we think is far better than it's been given credit for so far).
