Netflix has been trying to create its own Star Wars universe, but with the release of the director's cuts of Rebel Moon Part One and Part Two, they seem to have just thrown away a huge amount of money.
Rebel Moon has received a lot of attention and was supposed to be the “Star Wars of Netflix” with more blood and brutality. With $166 million for two films, Netflix gave Zack Snyder a big chunk of change to create his own sci-fi universe. But after two movies and two director's cuts, the project does not seem to be the hit Netflix wanted it to be.
“We Have Star Wars At Home”
Starting as an idea for the Star Wars franchise, Zack Snyder got the attention of many sci-fi fans, but with great attention comes great responsibility. Unfortunately, the first Rebel Moon failed to live up to expectations, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 22% from critics, but 56% from audiences. The audience score may be mediocre, but it is still worse than any Star Wars movie. Even the second movie could not help the new universe. Like the first, it only got an average score.
Snyder Needs His Director Cut
No one has given us as many director's cuts as Snyder. And like most of his movies, Rebel Moon gets the same treatment. Rebel Moon – Part One: Director's Cut and Rebel Moon – Part Two: Director's Cut were both released on August 2, 2024. Both got a slightly better score than the OG version, but are still bad in the eyes of the critics and only average to viewers. So the question is: Who really wants to spend 6.5 hours on two mediocre movies?
Is This The End?
Snyder said no. In an Interview with radiotimes.com, He mentioned that he has ideas for two or four more movies. Who knows, maybe he saved the good parts for the next movies. Hopefully…
