In a troubling incident that blurs the lines between virtual conflict and real-world consequences, an obsessed player of the MMORPG ArcheAge flew to the other side of the country and tried to murder his opponent with a hammer.
The exact details of the conflict remain unclear. However, Edward Kang, a 20-year-old player, has stated that the other person involved was "a terrible person" online. The hostility apparently led Kang to take drastic measures.
From Online Insults To Real-Life Rage
According to police reports, Kang's response to the online feud was frighteningly extreme. He booked a flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Jacksonville, Florida - a trip of approximately 1,400 kilometers that took about four hours. After arriving at his destination, Kang checked into a hotel and went to a local hardware store, where he purchased a hammer and a flashlight. These purchases were later confirmed by receipts found in his hotel room.
Kang made his way to Fernandina Beach, where his rival lived, and attempted to carry out a violent attack. According to reports, Kang was dressed all in black and wearing a mask when he entered his rival's home through an unlocked door. The confrontation occurred as the victim was on his way to the bathroom. Armed with the hammer, Kang attacked his rival, who screamed for help, waking his stepfather.
Together, the victim and his stepfather managed to disarm and eventually subdue Kang, who had previously told his family that he was traveling to Florida to meet "an old friend he knew from a game." However, law enforcement officials revealed that this was the first time Kang and his victim had met in person.
Legal Consequences
Edward Kang was subsequently arrested and charged with armed robbery and attempted second-degree murder. These charges typically involve little premeditation and focus on inflicting harm rather than killing. He is currently being held in the Nassau County Jail.According to the sheriff who observed the scene, there was a significant amount of blood in the entryway and bedroom areas of the home. The victim suffered serious head injuries but has since been released from the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities indicate that Kang could face more serious charges as new evidence emerges. Kang reportedly asked about the potential length of his jail sentence for the burglary and assault, to which the sheriff replied, "Mr. Kang, it will be a long time before you play video games again."
