Jennifer Pan is the subject of a new Netflix documentary, fittingly named What Jennifer Did. Ten years ago, she was convicted of the murder of her own mother, but where is she now?
Out of all the programs releasing on Netflix this month, What Jennifer Did is definitely one of the better offerings. It follows the case of Jennifer Pan, who arranged the killing of her own parents and tried to frame it to the authorities as a random home invasion gone wrong. But you already know that, of course, which is why you're here.
Jennifer Pan Today
Jennifer Pan is alive, and currently serving her sentence in the Grand Valley Institution for Women, in Kitchener, Ontario (pictured below). She was originally sentenced to 25 years, which would mean she would be eligible for release in 2039.
However, in 2023 her lawyers successfully argued for a new trial on the grounds that the original Judge had incorrectly instructed the jury to only consider scenarios that would justify a first-degree murder charge, rather than also considering scenarios that might have led to a second-degree murder charge.
If Jennifer Pan is convicted of second rather than first-degree murder in the new trial, then per Canadian law, she will be eligible for parole after ten years. At the time of writing, we cannot find a set court date for the new trial, but we have reached out to Jennifer's lawyers for clarification.
Here are some other great shows on Netflix for you to check out next:
- American Murder: The Family Next Door
- This docuseries investigates the horrific murder of the Watts family in 2018. But what sets it apart from similar shows is that it presents the audience with a digital papertrail of the Watts family in the days leading up to the murders; Facebook posts, Whatsapp messages and CCTV footage lend the show an eerie credibility.
- Don't F**k With Cats
- In Don't F**k With Cats, we follow the case from the novel perspective of amateur sleuths online, as they work together to find the man behind a series of videos that emerged on the internet showing cats being tortured and killed. But before they can catch up to the perpetrator, his crimes rapidly escalate.
- The Ripper
- This is about the Yorkshire Ripper from the 1970s, not Jack the Ripper. It's a gripping cat-and-mouse story, which sees the woefully inept Yorkshire constabulary trying to track down one of England's most infamous serial killers.
That was everything we currently know about Jennifer Pan in 2024.
Her co-conspirators Wong, Mylvaganam, and Crawford were also sentenced to life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 25 years. They too will be retried with Pan, and also might receive the lesser charge of second-degree murder. While Carty, the getaway driver, was only sentenced to 18 years, and is eligible for parole this year.
