The Diplomat is gearing up for its second season, and we've got all the info for you – including the release date, cast and all the other news your heart desires.
The latest TV sensation The Diplomat , created by Deborah Cahn, is gearing up for Season 2. We'll tell you all about it, including the confirmed cast members, some plot details and, of course, when the new season releases.
On April 20, 2023, The Diplomat debuted on Netflix's weekly global Top 10 TV (English) list with a total of 57.48 million hours viewed. No wonder, fans are now eager to find out what's about to happen next with such an explosive ending.
But first things first: When is the new season going to release, exactly?
The Diplomat Season 2 | Release Date
Thankfully, the wait is nearly over: Netflix confirmed The Diplomat Season 2 premieres on October 31, 2024. Got Halloween all planned out with this one!
And, just to refresh your memory before we dive into the cast to look forward to (we hope, at least...), here's how the first season ended:
In the closing moments of the Season 1 finale, Kate discovers that the mastermind behind the explosion of the British aircraft carrier in the series' pilot episode was none other than British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge. Just when it seems the situation couldn’t be more dire, the episode ends with a second explosion – potentially leaving her husband Hal, Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford, office clerk Ronnie, and MP Merritt Grove among the casualties.
The Diplomat Season 2 | New & Returning Cast
What would the show even be without our US ambassador, who climbed up the carrier ladder to a top-level government position in the first season? Therefore, Keri Russel will return in the role of Kate Wyler. She also shared that she is “thrilled to be heading back for another round of this smart screwball show.”
Other Season 1 actors making a comeback (hopefully...) include:
- David Gyasi as Foreign Secretary, Austin Dennison.
- Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief, Eidra Park.
- Nana Mensah as White House Chief of Staff, Billie Appiah.
- Miguel Sandoval as US Secretary of State, Miguel Ganon.
- Michael McKean as US President, William Rayburn.
- Celia Imrie as Meg Roylin.
- T’Nia Miller as Dennison’s sister Cecilia.
We also got one special newcomer for season 2! "Mom " and "West Wing " star Allison Janney joins the cast for a guest role as Vice President Grace Penn for the whole season. Allison Janney is an incredible actress and a proud winner of seven Emmy Awards and an Academy Award.
The Diplomat Season 2: What Do We Know About The Plot?
After an abrupt cliffhanger in the first season, we can luckily expect some resolution in Season 2.
In the finale of Season 1, there were two huge explosions out of nowhere, which could've led to multiple deaths, including Kate Wyler's husband Hal, Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford, office clerk Ronnie and MP Merrit Grove.
We'll finally find out whether they were killed by the blast or are recovering in hospital. Rufus Sewell (Hal Wyler) said the following in an interview with Tudum:
I hope we all survive. What can I say? I mean, I loved the dramatic turn. I just have to hope that everyone will be OK. But the drama needs to be real. [...] I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons]. Who knows?
Could this mean, there are even more seasons to come for us? Well, for that we need to be a bit more patient.
Showrunner Deborah Cahn also quoted that she "wanted to bring together all the different dynamics of the political relationships and the personal relationships in one event that splits apart all at the same time." That's why we got such an "explosive" ending.
So, mark your calendars for October 31 – we're in for some dramatic turns, it seems!
