At the beginning of God of War Ragnarök , you only have the two weapons, which were both in the predecessor: the Leviathan Axe and the Chaos Blades. These are amazing, super fun weapons, especially if you unlock the best skills for them. But of course, you can't go through an entire game as big as Ragnarök without something extra. And you thankfully get something extra, with the Draupnir Spear, which you unlock in the second half of the game.

In this guide, we will show you everything you need to know about the Draupnir Spear: how to unlock it, what the best build is and how you should use the weapon.

The Draupnir Spear... is a weird one. I love the weapon, but it took me a minute to get there. You unlock the spear during the "Forging Destiny" mission in Svartalfheim. It's unmissable, so don't worry. The mix of fast close-range-attacks with the throw's long-range abilities is really nice, it feels fairly similar to the axe in that regard. In theory at least. It ends up having its own rhythm to everything. And some of the abilities are a bit odd, especially the R2 attacks.

Best Draupnir Spear Build

We will show you, what you need to know to get the most out of the Draupnir Spear. Here are the best skills, runic attacks and attachments for the new weapon.

Best Skills

You will most likely be throwing this thing around a lot, so we strongly recommend getting "Draupnir's Wail", as well as all levels of "Spear Arsenal" and "Draupnir's Call". "Wail" allows you to hold Triangle, which will detonate all thrown spears and make the explosions even stronger than in the normal version of this move. "Call" strengthens the effect of the detonation, "Arsenal" gives you one extra spear per level.

We also recommend a number of skills, which have equivalents for the other two weapons. These are the sprint attacks "Hoplite Lounge" and "Phalanx Breaker", as well as "Maelstrom", which powers up your weapon after enough successive hits. To upgrade this skill, get "Violent Maelstrom" to unlock that sweet L1+Triangle move, which makes the spear even stronger.

An absolute must-have is "Elemental Siphon", which transforms a large part of the spear's moveset. Without this skill, the R2 attacks are fairly useless. But if you have this skill unlocked, you basically suck out the enemy's element by holding R2 and transfer it to your spear, giving it the respective element. This doesn't only mean more damage, as well as elemental damage (which also applies to spear throws), it also means you can now turn the spear into a makeshift shotgun of sorts.

Using the L2 + R2 move with a siphoned element strongly enhances the blast, making the attack much stronger and way more useful.

Best Runic Attacks

There are a number of fun runic attacks for the Draupnir Spear, but we recommend "Mountain Splitter" for the light attack and "Artillery of the Ancients" for the heavy attack. Both attacks are very powerful over basically any distance and can be effective against single enemies as well as groups.
