Remember the excitement we’d feel as children when hearing the Ghostbusters theme song? Get ready because you’re about to feel that all over again, as IllFonic has announced they're developing an upcoming game named Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed.

IllFonic hasn’t announced the exact launch date for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. However, various details regarding the game’s development schedule have been confirmed. For instance, IllFonic has revealed that Ghostbusters is being designed as a co-op multiplayer game for the Xbox and PlayStation consoles. That means we’ll be capable of downloading Ghostbusters onto our Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PlayStation4, and PlayStation5.

Since being announced on March 22nd, IllFonic has revealed more information than anyone could’ve expected for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. We’ve learned about the multiplayer & campaign modes, customization options, and gameplay features. But what should you know? Let’s find out.

Is Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed Coming Out In 2022?

Initially, inside sources at IllFonic suggested that Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed would be released by Q4 2022. But things have changed, and it appears we'll be getting this upcoming co-op shooter by Q1/Q2 2023. We think this timeframe is more favorable for IllFonic, as they won't be going against formidable competition like Hogwarts Legacy and the next Call of Duty. This should give the Ghostbusters an equal opportunity at becoming a popular game for next-generation consoles.

Everyone will begin Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed from the NYC Firehouse that is seen throughout the four films. It’s here that we’ll have options to customize our characters, their weaponry, and special items. Unfortunately, IllFonic hasn’t fully revealed what customization options there will be as the game progresses forward.

The NYC Firehouse addresses the four films that this franchise has seen, as Winston leads this customized squad of Ghostbusters into combat. It’s also known that characters like Ray and Egon will make appearances in various cut scenes, meaning that everyone can expect Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed to maintain a storyline. But what will this storyline entail? We won’t know until the game is released.

Characters like Winston will provide the Ghostbusters with four customizable weapons that are meant to act as special features. Those customizable weapons will include:

  • The Particle Thrower
  • Proton Pack
  • Ghost Trap
  • PKE Meter

The Head of Creative Development at IllFonic has additionally confirmed that we’ll be able to customize the ghosts we encounter. This means everyone should maintain a unique version of this game that focuses on their personality. For us, we’re getting the sense that customization options in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will be similar to other multiplayer games like Fortnite. But that isn’t a bad thing, as incredible gameplay can come from such an experience.

Speaking of the amazing gameplay that’s offered through Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, you’ll need to take time into consideration when playing in a multiplayer event. Why, might you ask? These ghosts are doing everything in their power to terrify civilians located throughout the various multiplayer maps. As these civilians are frightened, haunt meters begin to fill, and everyone flees the area. It’s our job to capture these ghosts and stop them from scaring any civilians. But don’t think defeating these ghosts is easy, as IllFonic has included three rifts into each map. As these rifts are broken, an onslaught of ghostly creatures will break through trying to frighten nearby civilians. You must destroy these rifts to ensure that the ghosts can’t wake from their slumbers anymore.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and can’t defeat these ghostly creatures, don’t worry, as IllFonic has added some gameplay elements for you. We’ll have the option to flee the region ourselves or hide from the demonic ghosts, and that helps with regaining your composure. Even better? There won’t ever be any connection issues when playing Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. IllFonic has promised their multiplayer lobbies won’t ever experience disruptions, and that you’ll always have the opportunity to beat these ghouls.

Will Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed Have An Offline Mode?

IllFonic haven’t forgotten about those players that prefer single-player experiences to multiplayer. Therefore, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed does maintain an offline mode similarly to Back4Blood. This means anyone playing the offline experience will be paired with three AI bots that have been trained heavily in combat.

IllFonic has ensured that those AI bots are designed to work in unison with players, not against them. This should mean any offline gameplay becomes as riveting and exciting as the multiplayer component.

Is Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed Part Of The Game Pass On Xbox?

Unfortunately, speculating whether Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed being released onto the Xbox Game Pass isn’t possible for now. We don’t have an official release date for IllFonic’s upcoming co-op adventure, and there hasn’t been any official support from Microsoft.

We wouldn’t be surprised if several months after Ghostbusters has released it becomes available through the Xbox Game Pass. However, there isn’t any guarantee that Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will launch onto the Game Pass.
