Phil "PG" Ciarletta is a top-ten charting Scottish artist with Italian blood. Naturally, we asked him about video games.
Phil ‘PG’ Ciarletta is the latest singer/songwriter in a long line of Italian-blooded Scots bursting onto the music scene. This ambitious artist has been catapulted onto famous stages like ‘King Tuts’ supporting ‘Andrew Cushin’ in Glasgow, and performing at ‘The Mash House’ in Edinburgh whilst supporting ‘Cameron Barnes’.
This ambitious Scot from Fife, Kirkcaldy is building on the momentum of each successive release, tour, and gig, traveling up and down the UK to perform live and entertain a variety of different crowds. One of PG Ciarletta's most recent gigs was in Aberdeen, where he supported ‘Skylights’ and played a stunning acoustic set with band members of ‘Gun’.
Phil studied music and played guitar at school, and has built his way up through a long history of open mics. He recorded his first few tracks in Glasgow, releasing that material in August 2020. His first release, ‘The Sesh’, set the bar high of what was to come from the Scot, and he has shown no signs of slowing down.
The debut single from PG Ciarletta even caught the attention of Shed Sevens' Rick Witter, who played the track on his radio show "Jorvik". Other releases ‘Chancer,’ ‘Let Go’ and ‘Bonnie Toun’ had support from Radio X, Amazing Radio, and were even mentioned by fellow Scot and Hollywood Actor Robert Carlyle, who endorsed the ‘Bonnie Toun’ single. Phil was selected by the RGM: Revt Good Magazine and The Songbird HQ as a top artist of 2021 and was described as "One to watch".
After hitting the Top 10 in the Official Scottish Singles Charts, and a Number One in the UK Alternative Chart, Phil has continued to place in the charts with each release. His eclectic selection of songs focus on narratives from his life, representing who he is, where he is from and his musical journey so far. In the words of Phil himself:
With each release the response is getting bigger, and my following is growing. To be able to finally perform my original songs in iconic venues across the country has been amazing, and I cannot wait to play my first headline at PJ Molloys in Dunfermline this Spring
PG Ciarletta has mainly been playing solo, but has now put a band together that's ripe and ready to conquer 2022. This band consists of Connor Whyte on guitar and Michael Adamson on drums. Both were previously in the band "The Moon Kids" and Ciarletta's new bass player, Keiran Forbes, played guitar and sang supporting several artists including ‘DOVV.’
After his single 'Bonnie Toun' was awarded BBC Radio Scotland's Afternoon show Track of the day, PG’s latest release ‘27’ led to a live acoustic session on BBC Scotland where he performed ‘Bonnie Toun’ and ‘27’ and was interviewed by Janice Forsyth. He was awarded Resonate Scotland’s Artist Of The Week and This Feeling's Track Of The Day, and was notably used on the highlights of the Everton and Crystal Palace game on BBC’s Match Of The Day 2.
With real-life relatable lyrics and an ability to get the room moving, fans of Gerry Cinnamon, Jake Bugg, Paolo Nutini, and The View are sure to rally behind Ciarletta. Whilst the melodies of ‘27’ will attract followers of The La’s and Aztec Camera.

Would you ever like to write music for video games? What would it be like?
Of course! I would create a high energy, dramatic, motivational, and positive sound. This musicality would be used to engage and energize gamers, and to give them an edge when zoned into various video games.
How important is music for video games / video games for music?
It's is very important for games, as music and video games go hand in hand in terms of setting a high user experience. Music can set the atmosphere and tone, increasing engagement for gamers, whilst complimenting quality designed video games. In my life I have seen great songs being labeled a "FIFA Song," and many songs being remembered for their inclusion in a video game, and visa versa. The combination of great music and great video games can be so important for the gamer, the game and the musician/band, opening doors and boosting longevity.
