Marvel Phase 5 is on the way and yet, it seems like the real treasure is still lying in wait. Marvel Phase 6 is promising a conflict that will make Avengers: Endgame look like a high school fight in comparison.
2022's Comic-Con in San Diego sure has been a treat for Marvel fans. Not only have we received a lot of information regarding Phase 5, Marvel even went so far and announced Phase 6!Man, Kevin Feige sure gave us a treat there.
Marvel Phase 6
This will include a new Fantastic Four movie as well as two whole Avengers movies. Oh, and not to forget the two untitled movies sprinkled in there as a little treat for all the theory enthusiasts, enjoying playing the world's greatest detectives. Oh, crap! Wrong franchise.
One of those Avengers movies is titled Avengers: Secret Wars and if you're familiar with the comics, you are probably aware of the scale of this saga. If not, here is what you need to know. And you better pay attention because this might just dwarf everything we have seen so far regarding superpowered edge lords in spandex on the big screen.
What Is Secret Wars?
There are two stories to tell. In 1984, the first Secret Wars was released. This first version introduces the Beyonder as an all-powerful villain that transports a group of heroes and villains to a planet where they fight for his amusement. This premise sounds a bit outdated, but I like the introduction of the Beyonder as a villain.
Spoiler Warning for the next part!
Even better is the reveal of Doctor Doom as the real threat when he manages to steal the Beyonder's powers for himself. I like Doctor Doom as a villain, so I really hope they keep that part!
Secret Wars Reimagined
2015's Secret Wars is a little more to my liking in general, the premise isn't as simple, and it also works better with what came beforehand in the Marvel Universe.
In this reimagining, the Multiverse has collapsed into a big mess of broken fragments from different realities that built the Battleworld. Again, the place where different heroes and villains shall duke it out, just a little more fancy.
In this hodgepodge of collapsed universes, different worlds collide. You have worlds from Days of Future Past, Age of Apocalypse or Old Man Logan, that each exist as their own, ruled by barons and scheming against each other. This sounds awesome! Imagine Game of Thrones meets Marvel! I can't wait! The Big Bad is God Emperor Doom, who rules over the Battleworld and will be the final challenge for the heroes. Seems they also liked the idea of an all-powerful Doctor Doom as the main villain.
This premise sounds a lot more fun, as you can combine different timelines, stories, etc. Spider-Man: No Way Home already showed us how fun crossovers like this can be. Secret Wars makes this possible on a whole other level! The great thing about the Secret Wars is that in the comics, it had a lasting impact on the Marvel Universe. If they carry this over into the Cinematic Universe, they have a lot of creative freedom to design the franchise moving forward.
Here just some ideas of what they can do:
- They can bring back Chris Evans as Captain America
- They can bring together the Sony Marvel movies, with the Disney ones
- They can bring back dead characters like Thanos, Gamora etc.
- They can introduce alternate versions of heroes and make them canon moving forward
- They can revert continuity mistakes they did during Phase 4 and 5 (Eternals, I'm looking at you!)
In the end, I'm sure the production team will give Secret Wars their own spin and not just adapt the comic book version. Therefore, we might end up with a different villain, or a different plot. But the premise of bringing different world's together sounds so promising that I don't think they can discard it!
They seem to have built up this moment since the Loki series. And even more importantly, as the Avengers movie before that, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, they have a perfect setup for the collapse of the multiverse!
In the end, I can't wait to see what's in store for us with Marvel Phase 6. Right now, it looks like it will be the most insane, epic and grand saga we have ever seen on the big screen! I just hope they don't mess it up because the quality of Disney's shows hasn't been all that great lately.
