The director for Fantastic 4 has stepped down, and now the upcoming MCU movie has some big shoes to fill...
You know, just when you thought that the Fantastic 4 movie was going to be good... everything falls apart. Why did I have faith in this Fantastic 4 rendition? Because Jon Watts was set to direct. If that doesn't mean anything to you - well, he's the director responsible for all the Tom Holland Spiderman movies. You know... the good Spiderman movies.
Fantastic 4 Loses Jon Watts
So yeah, there's no beating around the bush: This is terrible news for the Fantastic 4 movie. Jon Watts is one of the best superhero directors out there, and those don't grow on trees... just ask DC.
There is no malice in Jon Watts' departure, though. The reason is personal, and down to him simply not being able to cope with the workload. On Deadline, Jon Watts was quoted as follows:
Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life
Sucks. But... also super understandable. Now, Marvel is desperately trying to replace Jon Watts, and it seems like it will be a long while, until Fanastic 4 will hit theatres.
There is no word on possible replacement, but, at this point, the MCU has a stable of talented directors, so it's likely they will slot one of their own in. Personally, I'd love for Taita Wahiki to take over (the director behind the latest Thor movies), because he's arguably the most talented of the bunch.
